Washington, Sept 5: US President Donald Trump’s administration has asked the Supreme Court to overturn a federal appeals court ruling that found most of his tariffs illegal. In its filing, the administration said the tariffs are “a crucial part of our push for peace” in Ukraine. It argued that the President used his powers under IEEPA to impose tariffs on India for buying Russian oil. This, it said, was tied to the national emergency caused by Russia’s war in Ukraine.
The move comes amid growing trade and geopolitical tensions. On August 27, the US doubled tariffs on India to 50 percent. Half of this was meant to punish India for importing more Russian oil. The other half was part of Trump’s “America First” plan to reduce trade deficits.
The filing also claimed tariffs make America stronger. It said, “With tariffs, the US is a rich nation. Without them, it is a poor nation.”
