A violent attack on a television reporter and cameraman in Tamil Nadu has drawn sharp criticism from political leaders, including former Tamil Nadu BJP state president K. Annamalai and the Tamil Nadu VCK (TVK), highlighting concerns over press freedom and law and order in the state. The incident occurred in Krishnarayapuram, near Karur district, where journalists from the NewsTamil TV24x7 channel had gone to cover alleged illegal quarry operations. During their reporting, the reporter Kathiravan, cameraman Sebastian, and other associates were reportedly assaulted by a group of more than 50 individuals using stones and iron rods. The attackers are alleged to have acted under the leadership of a local political figure, leading to widespread shock.
Reacting strongly, K. Annamalai condemned the attack on social media, calling it a reprehensible act that has caused “shock and anger” among the public. He urged the authorities to arrest all those responsible immediately and to take action against those behind the illegal quarry activities. Annamalai questioned the state government’s priorities, suggesting that the assault reflects a failure of law and order under the current administration.
The Tamil Nadu VCK also issued a strong condemnation, denouncing the brutal attack as an assault on democratic values and press freedom. In their statement, the party described the violence as an attempt to “intimidate and silence the media” and stressed that no force undermining media independence would be tolerated by the people of Tamil Nadu.
The incident has sparked wider political reactions, with calls for a thorough investigation and appropriate legal action against all perpetrators. Journalists’ associations and civil society groups have also voiced concern over the safety of reporters covering sensitive issues and urged authorities to ensure better protection for media personnel in the field.
