Filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj has urged Tamil Nadu Minister for Social Justice Vanni Arasu to introduce strict rules and take action against transphobia, besides establishing a dedicated helpline for the transgender community.
Karthik Subbaraj shared the development on social media on Friday after meeting the minister at the Tamil Nadu Government Secretariat along with members of his film Dorothy. The minister appreciated the film for initiating a meaningful conversation and encouraging social change, the director said.
In his post, Karthik thanked Vanni Arasu for appreciating the film and said the minister had considered his request for stringent measures against transphobia in all forms. He also sought a dedicated helpline to enable transgender people to seek assistance and report discrimination.
The appeal comes amid a debate over remarks made by filmmaker Mohan G concerning transgender people and the themes explored in Dorothy. Karthik had earlier criticised the remarks, describing them as harmful and arguing that public discussions should not encourage hatred or discrimination against transgender people.
Dorothy, directed by Karthik Subbaraj, stars Sananth, Rishikanth and Keerthy Suresh. The film explores the life of a young person who comes out as transgender after growing up amid caste prejudice, patriarchy and violence. The decision creates conflict within the family and sets the story in motion.
The film has received a mixed response, while its portrayal of transgender identity and relationships has sparked discussion. Karthik and his team have also spoken out against what they describe as targeted hostility towards the film and its subject.
The director’s latest appeal has brought attention to the need for measures that address discrimination beyond cinema and public debate. A dedicated helpline, if implemented, could provide a point of contact for transgender people facing harassment or seeking support.
The minister’s response and any subsequent government action will determine how the request translates into policy. Karthik’s appeal has placed the issue of transphobia and the protection of transgender people back in the public conversation.
