A Arun, the newly appointed Commissioner of Police for Chennai, took charge on Monday, promising to bring criminal elements to their knees and ensure law and order in the city. His appointment follows the transfer of Sandeep Rai Rathore, who was reassigned earlier in the day in the wake of the brutal killing of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Armstrong. In his first interaction with reporters after assuming office, Arun asserted, “The criminal elements will be taught in a way they understand.” When questioned about the possibility of ‘encounters’ as a method to tackle crime, he clarified, “There is no such thing as an encounter. Regular and professional policing will bring down criminal activities in Tamil Nadu’s capital city.”
Arun, a senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, emphasized his commitment to combating corruption within the police force and assured that he would take decisive action against corrupt activities. “Law and order maintenance, prevention of crimes, and proper investigation of crimes, and curbing rowdyism, are my priorities,” he stated.
He further promised to enhance the reputation of the state government and Chief Minister MK Stalin by ensuring effective policing and public safety. “I will get a ‘good name’ for the state government and our chief minister,” Arun assured.
Before his current role, A Arun served as the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Law and Order, in Chennai. His extensive experience in handling law enforcement in the city positions him well to address the current challenges.
Sandeep Rai Rathore, Arun’s predecessor, has been appointed as the Director General of Police (DGP) of the Police Training College, with additional responsibilities as the ADGP/Director of the Tamil Nadu Police Academy.
The change in leadership comes amid heightened concerns about law and order following the recent high-profile murder. Arun’s appointment is seen as a strategic move to strengthen the police force’s ability to maintain peace and security in Chennai.
