The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has instructed YouTuber ‘Savukku’ Shankar to adhere to the bail conditions set by the court and to report daily to the District Crime Branch police in Chennai. The directive came during a hearing on Monday, where Shankar had sought a modification of bail conditions in several cases filed against him, including those pending before the Palanichettipatti police in Theni and the Cyber Crime Police in Tiruchy. One of the cases against Shankar in Theni relates to the alleged possession of ganja, while the case in Tiruchy involves accusations of making derogatory remarks about women police officers on social media. On May 4, 2023, the Palanichettipatti police booked Shankar and two associates under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act for illegal possession of ganja. Shankar was arrested by a special police team from Coimbatore the same day in connection with the derogatory remarks case.
Shankar, in his petition, claimed that he had multiple cases pending against him across Tamil Nadu. He added that in many of these cases, he was granted bail under the condition that he appears before the concerned police officers every morning. The High Court, however, reiterated the need for him to comply with the existing bail conditions, requiring him to sign in daily with the District Crime Branch police in Chennai.
