Growing morning walkers in Chennai reflects rising health awareness

Chennai’s parks, beaches, and walking tracks are witnessing a noticeable rise in the number of morning walkers, as residents become increasingly health-conscious. Popular spots like Marina Beach, Nageswara Rao Park, and Anna Nagar Tower Park are seeing crowds that start as early as 5 a.m., with people of all ages showing up to walk, jog, or engage in light exercises.
“Every morning, it’s inspiring to see so many people out here,” says Lakshmi Raman, a 42-year-old marketing professional who walks regularly at Nageswara Rao Park. “The pandemic reminded many of us how important health is, and walking is such an easy way to stay fit.”
A growing number of senior citizens are also joining the morning exercise routine. R. Krishnan, a 67-year-old retired teacher, shares, “I enjoy walking along the beach because it gives me energy for the whole day. I started a year ago, and now it’s a routine I wouldn’t miss for anything.”
Younger residents are also making an appearance at these spots, often in small groups. “After a long day in front of screens, a morning walk feels refreshing,” says Meera Chandran, a college student who frequents Anna Nagar Tower Park. “It’s become a great way for me and my friends to start our day and stay active.”
City health experts are encouraging the trend, as regular exercise is linked to numerous health benefits, including better mental health and immune support. “Walking just 30 minutes a day can do wonders for cardiovascular health, improve mood, and even boost productivity,” explains Dr. Arvind Kumar, a fitness coach and consultant in Chennai.
With walking spaces in Chennai becoming busier, the city’s commitment to fitness is clearly on the rise. For many, morning walks are a simple yet powerful way to embrace a healthier lifestyle.
