The grand Soorasamharam festival, celebrating Lord Murugan’s victory over the demon Surapadman, begins today with devotees gathering in large numbers to offer prayers and observe special rituals. This week-long event culminates on November 7 with the final enactment of Soorasamharam, marking a symbolic moment of good triumphing over evil.
Across Tamil Nadu, especially at iconic Murugan temples such as Tiruchendur, Palani, and Thirupparamkunram, vibrant decorations and elaborate arrangements have set a festive tone. Devotees have begun observing traditional fasting and performing special poojas, seeking Lord Murugan’s blessings for strength and prosperity.
“This festival is very sacred to us,” says Parvathi, a devotee from Chennai. “My family and I keep a fast and attend poojas every day during this time. It brings us peace and a sense of connection to Lord Murugan.”
Priests at major Murugan temples report a significant rise in devotees attending rituals and poojas during this time. “Soorasamharam is a powerful reminder of faith, and we perform special abhishekams and poojas throughout the week,” explains S. Rajan, a priest at Palani Temple. “Each day, devotees bring offerings and participate in rituals with devotion.”
The final day, November 7, will see the reenactment of Soorasamharam, with thousands expected to witness the ritual depiction of Lord Murugan’s victory. At Tiruchendur, in particular, where the festival is celebrated on a grand scale, arrangements have been made for devotees coming from various parts of the state. “I make this pilgrimage every year,” says Karthik, a devotee from Coimbatore. “It fills me with energy and reminds me of our rich tradition.”
With temples decked out in colorful decorations, the atmosphere is charged with spiritual fervor as devotees honor Lord Murugan’s valor and seek his blessings for the year ahead.
