The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has successfully cleared and disposed of 406 metric tonnes of firecracker waste generated during this year’s Deepavali celebrations. In a large-scale effort involving cleanup crews across the city, the waste was gathered and sent to a private facility in Gummidipoondi for safe incineration.
According to GCC’s report, cleanup efforts began immediately after the festival. On the first day of Deepavali, workers collected 92.78 tonnes of waste, followed by 167.55 tonnes on the second day, and 146 tonnes on the third, resulting in a total of 275 tonnes during the main festival period. Additional waste was collected in the following days, bringing the final total to 406 tonnes.
To ensure a safe disposal process, GCC adhered to strict safety protocols to prevent any environmental hazards. The waste was incinerated at a facility equipped to handle such materials, minimizing pollution and promoting city hygiene.
This efficient post-festival cleanup effort highlights GCC’s commitment to maintaining a cleaner, safer Chennai and reducing the environmental impact of festive waste. Through its proactive approach, the Corporation aims to set a standard for responsible waste management during large celebrations.
