The Chennai Port authorities have announced that the Chennai-Puducherry cargo ship service, which was halted due to technical issues and damage, will resume operations in January after repair work is completed.
Under the Central Government’s Sagarmala initiative to enhance maritime infrastructure, several projects have been launched to boost the shipping sector.
As part of this initiative, a small-scale cargo ship service between Chennai and Puducherry was introduced on February 27 last year. The vessel, designed to carry 106 containers at a time, operated twice a week between the two destinations.
However, within a few months of its launch, the ship experienced sudden technical issues, causing damage to some of its components. This led to the suspension of the service, which has remained non-operational for over a year.
According to Chennai Port officials, the cargo ship, currently stationed in Puducherry, is undergoing repair work by the concerned company. The repairs are progressing swiftly, and the service is expected to be operational again by January.
The revival of the Chennai-Puducherry cargo ship service is anticipated to play a significant role in enhancing coastal trade and reducing transportation costs, providing a boost to the regional economy.
The authorities have assured that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure the reliability and safety of the service once it resumes.
