In response to growing concerns over animal mistreatment and deaths at city-run Animal Birth Control (ABC) centres, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced plans to install CCTV cameras at five such facilities to improve oversight and accountability.A total of 60 internet-enabled CCTV cameras will be installed ā 12 cameras at each centre. These will be 3MP cameras with 4G SIM support and integrated video management software for centralised monitoring. The Rs 17.82 lakh project covers the supply, installation, and maintenance of the system, with a three-year warranty and technical support included.
Each ABC centre will be equipped with Network Video Recorders (NVRs), and the footage will be stored for a minimum of 30 days. Only authorised personnel from specific GCC departments will have access to the video data.
The initiative comes after the Tamil Nadu Animal Welfare Board raised concerns over the operations and surgical procedures at ABC centres. Officials said the new surveillance system is expected to improve transparency, deter any potential malpractice, and provide reliable video evidence to facilitate prompt action when required.
GCC hopes this move will restore public trust and ensure better care and humane treatment of animals at its facilities.
