Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has assured fishermen that even more ambitious welfare schemes will be implemented in the upcoming ‘DMK 2.0’ government. Speaking at the World Fisheries Day event in Kulachal, Kanyakumari district via video conference, Stalin highlighted various initiatives taken by his administration to support fishermen in coastal districts.He said his government has already announced welfare schemes worth over ₹576 crore to aid livelihood diversification, deep-sea fishing, and infrastructure development, including port expansions.
Stalin emphasized the state’s commitment to improving fishermen’s lives despite challenges in coordination with the central government. He has urged the Union government to take steps to recover Katchatheevu island and ensure the release of detained Tamil Nadu fishermen by Sri Lankan authorities.
The Chief Minister cited ongoing projects including the expansion of Kulachal port at an estimated cost of ₹350 crore and the construction of fishing harbors in Pamban and Kundukal to facilitate fishing activities.
Further, Stalin promised continued support and welfare for fishing communities, including providing subsidies for new fishing boats, technical training for fish processing and aquaculture, and alternative livelihood schemes.
He reaffirmed that the DMK government remains closely connected with fishermen and committed to enhancing their safety, income, and overall welfare in the years ahead.
