Cyclone Senyar, named after the Arabic word for “lion,” is developing over the Bay of Bengal and has raised significant alerts across Tamil Nadu as it threatens to bring heavy rains and strong winds to the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted that Senyar is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm by November 26–27. This weather system originated as a low-pressure area over the Strait of Malacca and adjoining Andaman Sea and is moving west-northwest towards Tamil Nadu’s coast.
Heavy rainfall is expected across various districts in Tamil Nadu, especially in the northern and delta regions. The IMD has issued orange alerts indicating very heavy rainfall—between 11 cm to 20 cm—in districts including Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, and Tiruvarur for November 28. The rain is likely to spread to seven more districts, including Chennai, by November 29, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.
Authorities have warned fishermen not to venture into the sea around the Bay of Bengal, the Andaman Sea, and coastal Tamil Nadu due to rough sea conditions.
Additionally, schools in several districts have announced holidays to ensure public safety amid persistent heavy showers.
While the exact landfall location and intensity of Cyclone Senyar remain uncertain, forecasts suggest possible impacts including local flooding, disruptions due to strong winds, and heavy rainfall over the next few days.
Emergency services remain on high alert to respond to any adverse conditions as the cyclone approaches Tamil Nadu.
