Beirut, Dec 17: Israeli military raids in southwestern Syria, including a recent attack on the village of Beit Jin that killed 13 civilians, have heightened regional tensions and undermined prospects for Israeli-Syrian rapprochement.Israel claimed it targeted militants planning attacks into its territory, reporting six troops wounded, while villagers insist they were defending their homes and were met with tank, artillery, and drone strikes. Damascus condemned the raid as a “massacre.”
Tensions come amid fragile political shifts in Syria after Sunni Islamist rebels overthrew President Bashar Assad. While Syria’s interim leader, Ahmad al-Sharaa, expressed no desire for conflict, Israel remains suspicious due to the rebels’ past militant ties.
Israeli forces have established a de facto buffer zone in southern Syria near the Golan Heights, constructing checkpoints, military installations, and landing pads, and regularly deploying tanks, Humvees, and reconnaissance drones.
Israel maintains its presence is temporary to neutralize threats, but offers no timeline for withdrawal. Talks on a formal security agreement have stalled, leaving the situation unresolved.
