Kallakurichi, Feb 9: With election season gaining momentum ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, questions have emerged about possible alliances between major and regional political parties. Amid speculation about discussions between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led alliance and the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), DMK minister E.V. Velu has issued a clear statement denying such talks.
Reports had circulated that DMK leaders were engaging with the DMDK on potential electoral cooperation. However, Velu, while addressing the media, firmly stated that he has not held any discussions with the DMDK regarding seat sharing or alliance arrangements. According to him, all alliance decisions will be made by the DMK leadership alone, and there is no basis to claims that negotiations with DMDK have taken place at this stage.
His remarks come at a time when political parties across Tamil Nadu are actively strategising alliances to strengthen their positions for the polls. The DMK-led coalition has been in talks with several partners and is yet to finalise its full seat-sharing plan. Discussions with some regional groups are reportedly ongoing, but Velu’s clarification suggests that the DMDK is not currently part of such negotiations.
Political analysts say that uncertainty over smaller parties like the DMDK reflects broader complexities in alliance building, as major parties assess vote-share prospects and negotiate terms. The DMDK, once a more prominent player in Tamil Nadu politics under the late Vijayakanth, has seen shifts in influence in recent years, adding another layer to alliance considerations.
