The Tamil Nadu Forest Department has announced a synchronized terrestrial bird census across all forest divisions in the state on 14 and 15 February 2026, part of its ongoing effort to monitor and conserve bird populations. The two-day exercise is aimed at strengthening baseline data on both resident and migratory birds during the early phase of the migratory season.
Officials said the census will be conducted in at least 25 locations within each forest division, using scientifically recognised methods such as the line transect approach, with each transect covering approximately 2 km. Both direct count and acoustic survey techniques will be used to document bird species across diverse habitats, ensuring robust and comprehensive data.
The state-wide initiative is expected to involve experienced birdwatchers, Forest Department staff, volunteers including school and college students, representatives from NGOs, and professional photographers. Volunteers interested in participating have been asked to register in advance with their local forest offices.
Last year’s terrestrial bird census, conducted on 15–16 March 2025, recorded 401 bird species across 1,093 locations statewide, documenting an estimated 2.3 lakh birds and underscoring Tamil Nadu’s importance as a biodiversity hotspot.
