Travel between Chennai and Tiruvannamalai could soon become significantly faster, with plans for a new high-speed expressway aimed at reducing the journey time to around two hours. At present, the road trip between the two cities typically takes four to five hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.
The proposed expressway is expected to provide a direct and faster corridor, improving connectivity between the state capital and the temple town. The project is also likely to ease congestion on existing highways and create a smoother travel experience for motorists.
The development will particularly benefit daily commuters, tourists, and pilgrims visiting the famous Arunachaleswarar Temple, one of the most important spiritual centres in Tamil Nadu. The temple attracts lakhs of devotees every year, especially during major festivals and full-moon days.
Officials say the improved road connectivity could also boost regional economic growth, encouraging tourism, trade, and easier movement of goods between districts. If implemented, the expressway would become a major infrastructure upgrade, strengthening transport links between northern Tamil Nadu and the state capital.
