Chennai, March 24:
In a bid to strengthen emergency preparedness, Chennai Metro Rail Limited conducted a surprise midnight mock drill at Koyambedu Metro Station, simulating a train derailment scenario.
The exercise triggered an emergency alert, prompting personnel from the Fire and Rescue Services to rush to the station within minutes. Teams coordinated closely with metro officials to gain access and manage the simulated crisis efficiently.
Though the sudden activity initially caused concern among members of the public, authorities later clarified that it was a pre-planned safety drill aimed at assessing response time and crisis management systems.
Officials said the drill was part of ongoing efforts to enhance passenger safety and ensure readiness in handling potential emergencies. The simulation tested coordination between multiple agencies, including metro staff and emergency responders.
The initiative comes in the wake of a derailment incident reported in 2024, after which CMRL stepped up safety protocols across its network. Measures have included регулярные inspections, infrastructure upgrades, and intensified staff training programmes.
Authorities said that such mock drills are essential to evaluate real-time response capabilities, minimise risks, and ensure swift action during actual emergencies.
CMRL reiterated its commitment to maintaining high safety standards and ensuring a secure travel environment for passengers across the metro network.
