Chennai,  Apr 22:

Tamil Nadu is fully geared up for a crucial day of democracy as the State heads to the polls tomorrow, with elaborate arrangements in place to ensure smooth and secure voting across all constituencies.

The Election Commission has established a total of 75,064 polling booths across the State, ensuring that all stations are equipped with essential amenities for voters. Extensive security measures have also been implemented, reflecting the high-stakes nature of the election.

An estimated 5.73 crore voters are eligible to cast their ballots, including a significant 1.21 crore young voters aged between 18 and 29. The electorate comprises 2.80 crore men, 2.93 crore women, and 7,728 third-gender voters, underlining the diversity and inclusivity of the democratic exercise.

To maintain law and order, a heavy deployment of police and central forces has been arranged. More than 5,500 polling booths identified as sensitive and vulnerable will see additional security cover, including armed personnel, to ensure incident-free voting.

This election has also set a new benchmark in terms of participation, with a record 4,023 candidates in the fray, including 443 women candidates, the highest ever in the State’s electoral history.

Multi-Cornered Contest Adds New Political Dynamics

While Tamil Nadu’s political landscape has traditionally been dominated by the Dravidian majors—the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the Opposition All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK)—this election has evolved into a multi-cornered contest.

The entry of actor-turned-politician Vijay leading his fledgling party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has added a fresh dimension, as the party tests its electoral strength for the first time.

Simultaneously, filmmaker-politician Seeman continues to expand his political footprint through the Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK), positioning itself on the plank of Tamil nationalism.

Adding to the complexity, V. K. Sasikala, a close aide of former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, has launched the All India Puratchi Thalaivi Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AIPTMMK). The party has aligned with a faction of the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) led by founder S. Ramadoss, contesting across constituencies.

However, political observers suggest that despite making the contest numerically a five-cornered battle, these newer and smaller formations are unlikely to significantly dent the traditional vote banks of the Dravidian heavyweights.

Decisive Moment for Tamil Nadu

The election is widely viewed as one of the most fiercely contested in recent years, marked by intense campaigning and high political stakes. With alliances, new entrants, and shifting voter dynamics in play, the outcome is expected to have far-reaching implications for the State’s political future.

All eyes are now on polling day, as millions of voters prepare to exercise their franchise in what promises to be a defining moment for Tamil Nadu politics.
