Chennai, June 2:
The Communist Party of India (CPI) on Monday strongly condemned the killing of an 18-year-old Sri Lankan Tamil woman, Yansi, in Koyambedu, terming the incident a serious challenge to the rule of law in Tamil Nadu.
In a statement, CPI State Secretary M. Veerapandian expressed shock over the increasing incidence of violent crimes in the State, including cases of sexual violence. He urged the government to take stringent legal action against those involved in the killing and ensure maximum punishment through due process.
The party also demanded stricter regulation of private pubs, calling for a ban on entertainment events in such establishments and immediate closure of those operating without proper government approvals.
Highlighting concerns over women’s safety, the CPI called for strengthening the police and intelligence mechanisms to ensure safer workplaces and public spaces. It warned that rising social and economic distress—particularly unemployment—was contributing to increased alcohol and drug abuse, as well as violent behaviour among youth.
The statement further pointed to psychological stress, lack of recreational opportunities, and inadequate sports infrastructure as factors aggravating the situation. It stressed the need for broader reforms in education, arts, literature, and cinema to foster a more progressive and non-violent social environment.
Calling for a coordinated and long-term approach, the CPI urged the Tamil Nadu government to address the root causes of violence and take comprehensive measures to ensure public safety and social stability.
