The album song ‘Pookie Ponnamma’, shot entirely across London and other locations in the United Kingdom, was unveiled at a grand event in Chennai on Wednesday. The project marks choreographer Sasi Master’s directorial debut, with him also handling the choreography.
Produced by Story Culture and released by Saregama India Limited, the song features Balaji Thirumal and Madhumitha. Music is composed by AJ, with GV Prakash Kumar and Sneha lending their voices to the track. KU Karthik has penned the lyrics.
For Balaji Thirumal, the song marks his debut as a lead actor and his first step towards a career in cinema. Speaking at the launch, he said he had nurtured ambitions of entering the film industry for nearly a decade, but family responsibilities had delayed his plans. He described the album as an introduction to his entry into cinema and said the team would soon announce a feature film.
Sasi Master said shooting in London posed several challenges, particularly the weather and tight schedules. Temperatures dropped to around minus five degrees Celsius at some locations, yet Madhumitha continued filming several sequences in sleeveless costumes. The team travelled extensively between Edinburgh and central London, often working within limited shooting windows.
The song also features dancers from Belgium, Spain, Africa and other countries, giving the project an international flavour. Guests at the launch appreciated its visual treatment, while cinematographer Mathesh Manickam and editor Praveen Bhaskar were praised for their contributions. The choreography, particularly the song’s hook step, emerged as one of the major attractions.
Madhumitha makes her album-song debut with the project and thanked the team for presenting her in a Western look different from the image audiences have generally associated with her. Composer AJ said the song marked his third independent track with GV Prakash Kumar and expressed gratitude to the singer and the entire team. Sneha described recording the female vocals alongside GV Prakash as a special experience.
Several celebrities who attended the launch praised the chemistry between the lead pair, the London locations and Sasi Master’s choreography. Many also expressed hope that the team would reunite for a feature film.
For Sasi Master, however, the project carries a deeply personal significance. He dedicated ‘Pookie Ponnamma’ to his late mother, who passed away 37 days ago. Saying that he believed she would be happy to see the song, he added that he felt she was still watching over the project.
