Acquiring residential lands for SIPCOT wrong: PMK

PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss has voiced strong opposition to the Tamil Nadu government’s plan to acquire land near Avadi for creating a land bank under the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT), warning that the move could displace around 10,000 families. Ramadoss criticized the proposed land acquisition, stating that it targets residential areas.
In his statement, Anbumani revealed that the government is planning to acquire 626 acres of land along the Outer Ring Road in Vellanur and Kummanur. He noted that the plan follows the DMK government’s first budget announcement, where they proposed creating a 45,000-acre land bank for future industrial projects. He expressed concern that SIPCOT had already written to the Tiruvallur district collector, urging them to take steps for acquiring the land.
Highlighting the impact on the local population, Anbumani pointed out that 488 acres proposed for acquisition in Vellanur include 428 acres of residential land, with over 2,000 houses, 5,000 plots, educational institutions, and small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Similarly, in Kummanur, 134 out of the 138 acres targeted for acquisition are also residential areas. He emphasized that Vellanur and Kummanur have become popular real estate destinations for those unable to buy property in Chennai, making the acquisition deeply concerning for residents.
Anbumani stressed that while PMK supports the industrial development of Tamil Nadu, the government’s approach has shifted from acquiring unused and poramboke lands to agricultural and now residential areas. He condemned the move, calling it an example of the government’s indifference to people’s welfare. He urged the government to seek unused land for the land bank instead of affecting residential localities.

Anbumani warned that if the government does not reconsider and drop the acquisition plan in Vellanur and Kummanur, PMK would organize a protest in defense of the affected families.
