The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has launched a city-wide crackdown on vehicles abandoned on public roads for more than 15 days, with the goal of reducing congestion and enhancing pedestrian safety. This new initiative is part of the corporation’s broader effort to clear public spaces and improve urban management.Under the policy, vehicle owners will receive a notification after 15 days if their vehicle is left unattended. If no action is taken, the vehicle will be seized and eventually put up for auction. Since the initiative began in July, the GCC has impounded 1,774 vehicles, of which 729 have been reclaimed by their owners. The remaining 1,045 vehicles are set to be auctioned.
The auction process will be handled through the Metal Scrap Trade Corporation’s (MSTC) e-auction platform, ensuring transparency. GCC will notify the public about upcoming auctions through newspaper announcements and social media updates.
This effort is expected to significantly improve traffic flow and road safety in Chennai by encouraging timely vehicle removal and freeing up much-needed space on the city’s roads.
