TVK may replace DMK in INDIA Bloc

New Delhi, June 2:

In a significant political development, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) may replace the DMK in the opposition INDIA bloc, as senior leaders prepare to meet in the national capital on June 8 to chalk out a joint strategy against the BJP-led government.

According to sources, the meeting is expected to bring together representatives from around 15 opposition parties, aiming to reinforce unity and coordination amid shifting political equations across states.

The development comes in the wake of recent Assembly elections, which saw two major INDIA bloc constituents — the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the DMK — being voted out of power in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu respectively, triggering a relook at alliance dynamics.

Top leaders likely to attend the meeting include TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, sources said.

In a notable shift, the Congress is understood to have distanced itself from the DMK and aligned itself with the TVK. As a result, the DMK is unlikely to participate in the upcoming meeting. Efforts are reportedly underway to bring the TVK, led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, formally into the INDIA bloc fold.

Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has already publicly distanced itself from the bloc and is not expected to attend the meeting.

Political observers view the June 8 meeting as a crucial step towards strengthening opposition unity ahead of future electoral battles, even as internal realignments and regional dynamics continue to reshape the coalition landscape.

Sources also suggest that discussions may extend beyond immediate electoral strategy to include long-term coordination frameworks, including seat-sharing mechanisms, joint campaigns, and a common minimum agenda for upcoming parliamentary and assembly elections.

However, internal differences among key regional parties remain a major challenge, with ideological variations and state-specific interests continuing to test the durability of the alliance structure.

The outcome of the June 8 meeting is expected to be closely watched, as it could redefine opposition politics and reshape alliances at the national level in the coming months.

Analysts note that any formal entry or elevation of TVK within the INDIA bloc could significantly alter political equations in Tamil Nadu, where coalition alignments are already undergoing rapid changes.
