One of Tamil cinema’s most cherished classics, Kandukondain Kandukondain, completes 25 years this May. Directed by cinematographer-turned-Starring an ensemble cast that includes Mammootty, Tabu, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Ajith Kumar, and Abbas, the film is an Indian adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic 1811 novel Sense and Sensibility. Set against a modern South Indian backdrop, Kandukondain Kandukondain follows the emotional journey of three sisters and their widowed mother as they grapple with life’s ups and downs after being uprooted from their ancestral home. Themes of love, resilience, heartbreak, and hope are seamlessly interwoven in this poignant tale.
Backed by V Creations, the film also featured stalwarts such as Manivannan, Srividya, Raghuvaran, Nizhalgal Ravi, and Shamili, with music composed by the legendary A.R. Rahman. The soundtrack was a runaway hit, and the song “Enna Solla Pogirai”, sung by Shankar Mahadevan, earned him a National Award for Best Male Playback Singer. The visual richness of the film was brought to life by cinematographer Ravi K Chandran and editor Suresh Urs.
The film’s script was later translated into English and published by Westland Publishers in October 2000, further solidifying its cultural significance. As Kandukondain Kandukondain returns to the big screen, a new generation of cinephiles will get to experience its timeless charm, while longtime fans relive its magic—proving once again why it remains a milestone in Indian cinema.
