The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced that roadside stalls will not be allowed on 22 major roads in the city. Officials said the move is to reduce traffic congestion and ensure public convenience.The Corporation has already identified about 35,000 roadside vendors and given them ID cards. In June, elections were held to select vending zone committees. Around 33,000 vendors voted, and six-member committees were chosen for each zone. The list has been sent to the state government for approval.
No stalls on 22 important roads such as Valluvar Kottam Road, Wallaja Road, Greenways Road, T.T.K. Road, Nelson Manickam Road, Anna Salai, Poonamallee High Road, Arcot Road, GST Road, and others.
No stalls within 100 meters of schools and hospitals.
No stalls within 150 meters of government offices and transport hubs.
Four officers have been posted in every zone to clear unauthorized shops. Recently, more than 70 stalls were removed in places like Anna Nagar.
Officials said the rules are meant to strike a balance between supporting vendors and keeping the city safe and convenient for the public.
