Kilambakkam’s grand bus terminus was built with the promise of becoming a gateway of convenience for lakhs of daily travellers. But today, the reality is far less comforting. Passengers continue to struggle, as two crucial projects — the Kilambakkam railway station and the 500-metre skywalk — crawl at a snail’s pace, their completion pushed back to March 2026, far beyond the original early 2025 deadline. The skywalk, planned as a modern lifeline with escalators and lifts, was meant to link the bus terminus seamlessly with the upcoming railway station across the busy GST Road. Designed to spare commuters the daily ordeal of risky road crossings and expensive auto-rickshaw rides, it now lies trapped in a tangle of compensation disputes and stalled construction.
On the other side, the railway station project, launched with much fanfare in March 2024, has barely limped ahead. After over a year, just one platform stands ready, far short of the bustling hub it was supposed to become.
Meanwhile, the ground reality is stark. Passenger traffic at Kilambakkam has already surged past 1.3 lakh daily, and with festival crowds around the corner, the numbers will only swell further. The absence of direct rail connectivity and safe pedestrian access has turned the terminus into a choke point, where congestion, delays, and safety hazards pile up every single day.
What was envisioned as a state-of-the-art transport hub now leaves commuters in the lurch, their hopes tied to projects mired in red tape and slow progress. Until then, Kilambakkam’s travellers will continue their uneasy balancing act between risk and expense, waiting for a promise that keeps slipping further away.
